Cat urine problems are just as common in cats as they are with us humans

Such cat health problems need to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible because it can be quite a painful condition

>> Learn vet secrets to diagnosing and treating cat urine problems here

Feline urinary problems can be detected in a number of ways and may be either behavioural or due to an actual urinary infection.

Ways of spotting the signs include your cat urinating outside of its litter box or in sinks or bathtubs, urinating often but in tiny amounts or you notice that it is straining to pass water

Ever wondered if there’s something you can do at home to prevent or treat cat urinary problems? Here’s a list of five natural remedies for cat bladder infection, along with how to choose the best natural remedies for pets.

Feed Your Cat A High-Quality Canned Food

But, you say, this isn’t a natural remedy. Actually it is. Feeding your cat the best diet possible is the easiest natural way to keep him healthy and prevent future problems due to poor nutrition.

Did you know that cats that eat only dry food are chronically dehydrated? Dry food has an extremely low moisture level, compared to canned food. Cats are meant to get most of their water from their food, so many of them don’t drink enough water, which can lead to cat urinary problems.

Fresh, Clean, Water Is A Must

Lots of clean, fresh water is another natural remedy that promotes bladder health in your cat. Your tap water may taste funny to your cat, so give him filtered water to make it more appealing to him. If your cat still won’t drink enough, you can add a little extra water to his canned food to increase his moisture intake.

My cat loves this and it seems to make a kind of gravy that he laps up as he is eating the more chunky bits

Recommended Supplements

If your cat is suffering from a feline bladder infection, try giving him between 250 and 500 milligrams of vitamin C every day. Vitamin C is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps to relieve the pain of a cat bladder infection. It helps an irritated, inflamed bladder to heal itself, too.

Vitamin C can cause diarrhea if the dosage is too high, so start on the low side and work up to determine the best size dose for your kitty.

Cranberry is an old natural remedy that prevents bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls. Avoid the super-sweet cranberry juice at the grocery store, and give your cat cranberry capsules instead.

Herbal Pet Remedies

Many of these same herbs that people have been using for centuries can be used on pets, too. The best-known herbal pet remedies for feline urinary tract infections are uva ursi and Oregon graph holly.

Uva ursi is a strong diuretic that kills bacteria in the bladder, and also supports urinary system health.

Oregon grape holly contains berberine, a natural antibiotic that’s effective against strep and staph bacteria. It also relieves inflammation in the bladder.

Homeopathic Remedies For Cat Bladder Infection

Cantharis is a homeopathic remedy that is very effective for relieving pain. It’s also useful when your cat is straining to empty his bladder, since it gets rid of the feeling that the bladder is still full, even after it’s just been emptied.

Staphysagria also relieves pain and promotes healing of inflamed tissues.

How To Choose The Best Natural Remedies For Pets

You’re probably wondering how you’re going to give your cat four different herbs and homeopathic remedies. Wonder no more. There is a product available now that combines all four of these traditional remedies. It’s safe and effective, as well as being easy to use.

You’ll be relieved to know that you can give this remedy right along with any antibiotic treatment your cat is on. This herbal remedy for pets doesn’t interfere with the antibiotics in any way. And you can continue giving your cat this remedy to support bladder health long after the antibiotic is finished.

Now that you’re armed with this information, you can prevent cat urinary problems from sneaking up on your feline friend.

Funny Cats

Urinary problems in cats can be a painful and recurring problem. Cats with weakened immune systems, such as those that are already ill or elderly, are at a greater risk for urinary issues. Although there are other causes, bacteria is often to blame for bladder problems in cats. Animals that are overweight or that have long hair tend to be less able to clean the faeces from around their genitals and this can predispose them to bladder infections. In many cases, these problems in cats can be greatly reduced, or avoided entirely with preventative care.

Of course, little persuasion should be needed as to the prudence of taking care in the sun. It may surprise some to learn that animals too can be just as susceptible to the sun’s rays, and family pets that spend a lot of time outdoors can be at a far greater risk of developing skin cancer than those confined to an indoor environment.

For example, dogs with short white coats and light coloured skin such as Dalmatians, Bull Terriers, Whippets and Greyhounds are most at risk from developing sun-induced disorders later in life.

More Water

You should also consider your cat’s water source. Tap water that has chemicals in it that may not be appealing to your cat and so it may not drink as much as it needs. This can cause urine to thicken and slow down. The cat won’t eliminate all of the urine from the bladder and this will encourage bacterial growth. Make sure that your cat has access to clean, pure water at all times. You can’t make him drink it but making it available when he wants it may help prevent urinary problems.

Powerful Herbal Extracts

You can also give your cat a natural remedy that targets urinary tract infections in animals. These remedies contain herbal extracts like Cantharis and Uva Ursi that restore the proper pH to your cat’s bladder so it can heal. These gentle remedies don’t have the harsh side effects of prescription medications and steroids. Since they are mild, they can also be used as a daily routine to prevent urinary problems in cats.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in dogs, and the second most common type of cancer in cats. But if it’s detected early enough then treatment is a genuine option, though it’s likely to incur considerable fees from the vet – which is why it’s important to have adequate pet insurance in place.

There are serious conditions that can cause urinary problems in cats and you need to have him tested to make sure he doesn’t have one of them

Cat Illness Symptoms

Giving cats pain relief is not recommended without the say so of a veterinarian and prescription and should always be under supervision. No one likes to see their pet in pain but before giving your cat any non prescriptional medication, do make certain that there is something wrong. Bone and joint disease is the most common factor for pain in cats. One common problem is cat arthritis pain. Cats are extremely cunning and can hide that they’re ill.

>> Vet secrets. Find out how to tell when a cat is in pain

The best place is the vets when your cat is ill for some unknown reason. A lot of people can mistakenly believe that their cat is healthy when in truth their cat is suffering but hiding it well. Some symptoms of a cat that is unwell are as follows; lack of appetite, increased sleeping pattern and increased howling or hissing. If you think your cat might be ill, keep an eye on it to check if it still grooms itself, as this is often a symptom of illness. Cat’s skin can be very sensitive so you have to be careful when grooming them.

Signs of illness can include obvious agitation and growling, as well as fast breathing. No one knows your cat better than you so as soon as you feel that something is not quite right with it, an appointment at the vets should be made. Pain relief for cats is often varied as a lot of the time it is hard to predict just how much pain the cat is in or how the cat will react to the medication. Through the combination of various medications, scientists have discovered that cats do not have to be given such high doses which often lead to side effects.

Pain in cats should always be treated as soon as possible before it develops into anything critical. Health issues manifest themselves differently in animals, so when your cat acts differently then normal, it may be the first sign of a problem with its health.

In this article we will take a look at some skin disorders which could affect your cat, the symptoms of these conditions and what you can do about them

If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of your cat suffering then you should consult with your vet.

>> Vet secrets revealed. Check this out before going to the vet

Most cats are covered with a thick, protective fur. This makes it very hard to spot if a cat has a skin issues prior to it becoming a lot more serious. It is important to take time on a regular basis to examine your cat’s skin closely for anything that may be wrong.

Move your hand steadily over his body and explore the skin for any strange patches. If you find any, part the fur by brushing it slightly, so that you can see beneath the fur and have a better look at the skin. If you carry this out regularly and understand your cat’s body, you should notice any cat problems very quickly and help to prevent any undue suffering. You will learn to know what looks normal and what doesn’t.

Cheyletiellosis

Cheyletiellosis is a skin disorder in cats is caused by skin mites and is very contagious between cats as well as humans. In cats, the symptoms are itching and it usually results in heavy scaling and flaking of the skin, which is why Cheyletiellosis in cats is often referred to as walking dandruff . This particular condition is usually not deadly and can be easily treated with the correct medication as soon as the condition has been diagnosed and confirm.

Feline Alopecia

Alopecia is a skin disorder in cats that will cause hair loss due to endocrine disturbances, localized infections, or generalized illnesses. This can also be caused by stress. The cats symptoms included bald patches on the skin and can be accompanied by reddened or inflamed skin. Not a deadly skin disease, and with quick and correct treatment, the fur would in most occasions grow back.

While most skin conditions are cause by allergies to food and pesticides or bites, and can be easily managed and treated, early detection is still important. A short amount of time daily could stop any period of discomfort or pain to your cat later on.

Please see cats fleas and cat illnesses for related articles.

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common disorders of the endocrine (hormone) gland that affects a huge population of cats. It can severely affect pet health and needs to be taken care of before it causes severe pet health problems.

Surgery Or Medicine For Cat With Hyperthyroidism?

The thyroid gland is situated in the neck of your cat and is quite small in size. It produces a thyroid hormone also known as thyroxine (T4) as well as small amounts of triodothyronine (T3). These hormones help in regulating the metabolic rate of the cat’s body and can affect the working of every system or organ in his body.

The thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) produced in the pituitary gland controls the production of thyroid hormones. If this production stops or if the required amount of hormones is not produced then it can adversely affect pet health.

When you bring home kittens, you need to take advice from your vet regarding its food, diet and ask different types of pet health questions. The pet health questions can vary from understanding the various diseases to knowledge of symptoms and treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats. Hyperthyroidism is actually caused when the thyroid gland of your cat starts producing excessive thyroid hormones and this condition is known as hyperthyroidism.

The immediate cause for hyperthyroidism is due to the increase in non-cancerous cells of the thyroid gland. These are abnormal cells and can vary in different sizes from small nodules known as adenomas to bid nodules known as multiple adenomas. In the last 25 years, there has been a rise in the number of cats affected by hyperthyroidism. This is a medical condition that needs good pet health care.

Hyperthyroidism normally occurs in those cats, which are aged between 4 years and 22 years. Normally, this medical condition occurs as your cat will grow older, which means that you will have to take better care of pet health . Hyperthyroidism can affect both male and female cats.

The various symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

Increase in the consumption of food
Weight loss
Vomiting
Increase in water consumption
Increased urination
behavior changes
Nervousness and restlessness
Increased activity or hyperactivity
Hair loss
Tremors
Diarrhea
labored breathing
Loss of appetite

These affects overall pet health and can be taken care of only if you are able to identify any of the symptoms and take your cat to the vet immediately. Some cats even show rapid heart rate due to hyperthyroidism leading to high blood pressure. Those cats that are not treated for hyperthyroidism might develop a fatal heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can lead to death.

What is the treatment of Hyperthryoidism?

There are currently three main treatments for hyperthyroidism in cats and your veterinary surgeon will discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you.

Medical treatment

Surgical removal of the thyroid gland

Radioactive iodine therapy

Medical treatment

Using anti thyroid drugs is often the first line of treatment for a hyperthyroid cat. These drugs often have to be given two or three times a day so can be difficult for some owners to administer in an uncooperative cat. They act by reducing the amount of thyroid hormones released by the thyroid gland. The effect of these drugs may need to be monitored by blood tests at regular intervals. They are often successfully used in the long term treatment of hyperthyroidism and some cats can be maintained on these drugs alone. Occasional side effects of these anti-thyroid drugs include anorexia, vomiting and lethargy.

Surgical removal of the thyroid gland

Surgical removal or thyroidectomy is a delicate operation performed if the medical treatment of hyperthyroidism is proving unsuccessful. Possible complications include nerve damage and parathyroid gland removal. The parathyroid gland is a very small often unidentifiable gland which is positioned adjacent to the thyroid gland. This gland is responsible for the control of calcium levels in the blood and its accidental removal can cause signs of hypocalcaemia which owners should be aware of in cats that have undergone thyroid surgery.

Radioactive iodine therapy

An injection of radioactive iodine is a relatively safe and successful curative treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats. The radioactive iodine is selectively taken up by the thyroid gland where it works by destroying this overactive thyroid tissue. It also destroys thyroid tissue not accessible by surgery. Because it only selectively targets thyroid tissue, no other tissues in the body are harmed including the parathyroid glands so there is no risk of developing hypocalcaemia. There is also no anaesthetic involved.

Cat health Problems:Hair Loss

Some glandular diseases such as Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism can give rise to hair loss in cats, generally in a symmetrical pattern along both sides. This condition may arise from overproduction of steroids

Cat Illness Prevention

In short a good quality wet food diet low in magnesium and acid is the best for cats with a propensity to contract this disease. In this instance cat illness prevention is possible.

Not all cats will have all symptoms, and about 20% of hyperthyroid cats will be sluggish and depressed instead of hyperactive. Untreated, hyperthyroidism can cause a serious heart problem called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Cat Hyperthyroidism-A Brief Introduction

When it comes to possible contributing factors for cat hyperthyroidism, there is still much that is not understood. however, it’s believed that factors such as age, environment, and diet could be related to the development of thyroid .

Cat Food

Statistically it has been found that cats fed a diet of fish-based cat food develop more hyperthyroidism and other glandular ailments. This may be due to rancid polyunsaturated fats found in poorer animal-quality fish products.

How Can I Change My Cat’s Diet?

Some cats develop strong food preferences. These cats may resist diet changes. In my experience, the best way to transition cats from one food to another is to do it very gradually.

Distemper is a distressing and often painful condition in cats and it is important to catch it early since it is contagious and needs early treatment.

There is no actual cure for feline distemper. But with early intervention and loving care, your cat can survive this disease. Distemper is usually a disease of young cats, which, having once had it and having recovered, are protected from future attacks.

It is however, sometimes seen in older cats especially so when the disease occurs when the disease is constantly present in an animal community but only occurs in a small number of cases or affecting a large number of animals at the same time.

The first symptoms of distemper are those of fever, with the combination of symptoms such as an inflammation of one of the organs, or an injury which is somewhat serious, it shows that it is ill more decidedly than any other animal. It appears sicker with troubles of the same severity than do other animals.

In the beginning the cat loses its appetite and may suffer pain in the abdomen, and seeks a dark corner, where it wants to remain out of sight. These may be more or less severe according to the gravity of the attack. Shortly after the beginning of the fever you will find a watery discharge from the eyes, which may become crusty later: a discharge from the nostrils of thick mucus at first, and crusty later which may even be tinged with blood.

The disease may be followed later by diseases of the respiratory system or of the digestive system, which in their local appearance are Gastritis, Constipation and Diarrhea, including those of the stomach, the intestines, but which are more severe than they are in their sporadic form, because they are grafted onto the body of an animal already suffering from fever and weakened by it.

Let it be understood, however, that in cases which have been going on for some little time, while the present condition of the animal is perfectly evident, it is not possible to make a diagnosis between these two following conditions;

1. A cat which has been infected first with distemper, has developed fever, and has the complication of a severe bronchi-pneumonia or of a severe diarrhea, or is excessively debilitated and weak; or

2. A cat which has been affected with a severe bronchitis and bronchi-pneumonia , or a severe diarrhea which is continued for some little time, and has produced by the local irritation and inflammation a fever which is secondary, and the cat has been weakened and is greatly debilitated.

Your pet cat wil need treatment from a vet, such as antibiotics and may even need fluids given intravenously. You job will be to keep her as comfortable as possible and maybe to give some cat pain relief and to be aware of the symptoms so that you know what to expect.

These two cases are absolutely identical, and the treatment for it is practically the same. Suppose, however, that not one cat alone, but several, are found in the same house or stable in the same condition, or in variable degrees pointing toward the same disease, or other cats have been presenting the same symptoms, then you can assume it to be distemper.

The cat with distemper must be isolated at once, and put into a quiet room where it is well protected from drafts of air, while still supplied with fresh air. Consult with your veterinarian as distemper can be very contagious. The strength of the cat must be kept up, but do not force food unless it is absolutely necessary.

This information is intended as an informational guide only. This is not to be substituted for professional veterinary care. Always ask your Veterinary for advice and have them explain why they have chosen that treatment and what the side affects are.

Understanding FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and how it affects your cat

Can it be treated?

These are the questions asked about this deadly feline virus.

It can also be a very painful condition due to secondary infections and complications.

So the cat owner may also be left looking for treatments for

cat pain relief

Feline Immuno deficiency Virus, more commonly known as FIV, is what is known as a retrovirus.

Cat Health Questions

When retroviruses invade a host, they replicate inside the host by using an enzyme called “reverse transcriptase”. The process is to use its own RNA as a template to create new DNA within cells of the host. In this way they evade the host body’s natural immune defense mechanisms while they make new copies of themselves. The virus then attacks the host’s immune response cells (antibodies) causing a reaction in the host’s body, in this case your cat, to produce elevated levels of antibodies. It becomes virtually a war waged within your cat’s body. With increasing destruction of antibodies, the host’s body then becomes vulnerable to other diseases and infections that it normally would find easy to fend off. The FIV virus and the HIV virus which causes AIDS in humans work in very similar ways.

How is FIV Transmitted? FIV cat disease prevention

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is fragile. It can be inactivated or destroyed with ultraviolet light, exposure to high temperatures, drying of the liquid medium it’s transmitted in, or when subjected to detergents. Since these things can also be harmful to your cat, this weakness can be only exploited when the virus is outside of her during the transmission stage of the virus from one cat to another. Basically, this means that keeping your cat’s environment clean can help reduce transmission of the disease.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is most commonly transmitted through bodily fluids, i.e. saliva or blood.

Male cats are more susceptible to FIV than females since they tend to fight more often. The first line of defense against this disease is to neuter your cat to reduce the instincts for territorial or sexually aggressive behavior. Limiting your cat’s contact with stray or feral cats will also reduce the incidence of FIV infection. If your kitty comes home with fresh wounds, clean them immediately. It may not be sure prevention, but any and all efforts can only be helpful to prevent the infection of your favorite kitty.

The transmission of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus from a mother cat to her kittens is very rare.

If it does occur, it’ll usually happen when the mother is infected during lactation or gestation. Generally speaking, Queens infected before pregnancy do not have infected kittens. And, good mothers don’t leave bite wounds on their kittens.

One other thing about retroviruses… they are species specific. FIV occurs only in cats (including the big wild cats, i.e. lions, snow leopards, etc.), just like HIV only occurs in humans; though it is a derivative of a primate virus occurring in chimpanzees. Which leads me to think that we shouldn’t be surprised if the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus should mutate and invade species which share genetic, physiological, environmental and/or other similarities with cats.

FIV Has 3 Stages of Development

The first stage of the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus infection is called the “acute” stage and is characterized by fevers, susceptibilities to skin & intestinal infections, and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms usually occur 4-6 weeks after infection. At this time there may be elevated levels of your cat’s antibodies present.

The second stage is called the “latent”, more formally the subclinical stage, and there’re no signs of the disease. This stage may last for years, but during this period the immune system is slowly being destroyed.

The third stage is the final, AIDS-like stage when the immunodeficiency becomes severe. It occurs most commonly in cats 5-12 years of age. In this clinical stage the cat’s immune system isn’t operating properly and she is prone to infections that under normal circumstances her body would easily ward off. But since her immune system cannot keep these infections under control, they multiply rapidly causing disease. Infections such as these are called “opportunistic infections”.

Clinical Symptoms of FIV

Infected cats will show non-specific symptoms such as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss and swollen lymph nodes. In addition symptoms of FIV and FeLV (Feline Leukemia) are very similar. Additionally, other signs of the infection can occur:

Oral Infections such as gingivitis, mouth pain and refusing to eat.

Eye Diseases, redness, discharges, cloudiness or even glaucoma.

Gastrointestinal signs such as chronic diarrhea, bacterial or parasitic infestation.

Upper Respiratory Disease with sneezing & nasal discharge, breathing difficulties or coughing.

Skin & Ear Infections which are chronic. Ear mites, ringworm, mange, itching and hair loss.

Neurologic Diseases which can cause changes in behavior, loss of house-training habits, and dementia.

Anemia

When the immune system is depressed lymphoma and leukemia are always a dangerous possibility.

The above symptoms are not the final test for the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus since they can indicate the presence of any number of infections and diseases. If your kitty displays any of these signs the best care for your cat would be to take her to your veterinarian to be given specific tests based on the doctors analysis of her condition. Most chemistry tests show cats with FIV to be normal. But, these tests might indicate anemia and decreased numbers of white blood cells in ill cats. Also, a protein called globulin may be elevated in FIV infected cats.

Testing For FIV

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus infection is diagnosed with tests which detect a cat’s antibody production against FIV. Remember, antibodies are usually present 3-6 weeks after infection. But, it takes 8-12 weeks for detectable levels of antibodies to appear. Keep in mind the scuffle that Beauregard got into with that strange Tom… which, by the way, you never saw again.

Therefore, testing should be performed 8-12 weeks after the suspected infection occurs. If the infection occurrence timeline is unknown, kitty should be tested once, then again in 8-12 weeks. Tests can prove problematic since the occurrences of false and false positive tests is quite common. It usually takes a series of tests to reach a sure and accurate conclusion.

FIV Treatment

At this time there is no cure for FIV. If your cat is infected with the disease, she should be kept indoors to prevent secondary infections and to keep her from infecting other cats. Your veterinarian will use aggressive treatments of any infections she acquires as a result of her lowered immune system. Antibiotics for secondary infections, a good diet with adequate fluids will help your cat enjoy a quality filled life, and in the case of FIV, a sometimes long life. Remember, FIV can remain dormant for years.

Cats, just like any other animal and their caretakers, can get sick.

If you love cats and own them, there are some things you should know about the types of cat illnesses that can affect your feline friend.

Leukemia

Even for humans, this word is one you never hope to hear. For Felines, it’s a virus, that works by producing an enzyme that it then inserts into healthy cells infecting them. Just like a retrovirus. Because of this, it is a particularly nasty illness.

Cats who have the cat feline leukemia virus are found all over the world. The likelihood of a cat becoming infected can depend a lot on the age of the cat, its health, environment and lifestyle. Cats who are very young or ill have an even greater chance of contracting the virus. This is why cat care is so important.

How Do Cats Become Infected?

Other cats are the main source of the infection being spread. The virus is
passed on in large amounts through saliva or nasal fluids. But it may also be passed on through urine, faeces and milk from the cats that are infected. The virus is also passed on through cat-to-cat contact, such as fighting resulting in wounds, when cats groom each other and, sometimes, through sharing litter boxes.

Which Cats Are At Risk Of Infection?

Any cat is at risk of being infected, although some cats are at a greater risk than most. If a cat is living with other cats that are infected or it is unknown whether they are infected with feline leukemia virus, risks of the cat becoming infected are very high.

If you allow your cats to roam free out of doors then their chances of contracting this disease increases. They run a greater risk of coming in contact with infected cats and being bitten or scratched, allowing the virus to transfer itself. Kittens have a greater risk of becoming infected, especially when they are nursing since the virus can be transmitted through the mother’s milk. Also, they have weaker immune systems.

Feline Leukemia: How to spot the symptoms and what it does to your feline

Feline Leukemia works very much like HIV in humans. It attacks the immune system of your cat, making it difficult for your cat to fight off even the most minor of illnesses. It can cause otherhealth problems for your cat as well, such as blood disorders and has been linked as being a source of cancer in cats.

At first, your cat may show no signs of the virus at all. But over time, your cat’s health will begin to deteriorate or he may suffer from re-occurring illnesses. Some of the main signs that you may notice are loss of appetite and weight-loss. At first, weight-loss will be minimal, but late in the disease, you may notice your cat wasting away.

There are also other signs that usually show up a bit later in the diseases progression. These include fever, enlarged lymph nodes, pale gums or gums that are inflamed.

By paying attention to your cats health, learning about common cat disease like cat kidney disease and others, you may be able to avoid this dangerous cat illness
