Cat Illness Symptoms

Giving cats pain relief is not recommended without the say so of a veterinarian and prescription and should always be under supervision. No one likes to see their pet in pain but before giving your cat any non prescriptional medication, do make certain that there is something wrong. Bone and joint disease is the most common factor for pain in cats. One common problem is cat arthritis pain. Cats are extremely cunning and can hide that they’re ill.

>> Vet secrets. Find out how to tell when a cat is in pain

The best place is the vets when your cat is ill for some unknown reason. A lot of people can mistakenly believe that their cat is healthy when in truth their cat is suffering but hiding it well. Some symptoms of a cat that is unwell are as follows; lack of appetite, increased sleeping pattern and increased howling or hissing. If you think your cat might be ill, keep an eye on it to check if it still grooms itself, as this is often a symptom of illness. Cat’s skin can be very sensitive so you have to be careful when grooming them.

Signs of illness can include obvious agitation and growling, as well as fast breathing. No one knows your cat better than you so as soon as you feel that something is not quite right with it, an appointment at the vets should be made. Pain relief for cats is often varied as a lot of the time it is hard to predict just how much pain the cat is in or how the cat will react to the medication. Through the combination of various medications, scientists have discovered that cats do not have to be given such high doses which often lead to side effects.

Pain in cats should always be treated as soon as possible before it develops into anything critical. Health issues manifest themselves differently in animals, so when your cat acts differently then normal, it may be the first sign of a problem with its health.

Many people prefer having a pet cat to having a pet dog purely because of the low maintenance factors.

They do not require daily walks, they aren’t demanding creatures who beg for your attention and they don’t take up a lot of space in the house and block doorways.

Signs Of A Cat In Pain And How To Relieve It

However, cats still require looking after and as a cat owner you need to be aware of how your dear pet is feeling, even if you only see them at mealtimes.

One of the most difficult cat illness symptoms to look out for is pain.

Cats are especially clever at hiding their own pain and suffering. Naturally, pain is a sign of weakness in the wild and even thoroughly domesticated cats have strong natural instincts. This unfortunately, makes it even more difficult for cat owners to detect the signs of suffering in our feline friend’s behaviour. If you suspect any signs of injury, illness or suffering in your cat please do not hesitate to book an appointment with your vet as it could be more serious than it is letting on. Pain relief for cats can be obtained with the proper authorisation, advice and guidance of a vet.

As cats get older they age in a very similar way to us humans, albeit much faster than us. They can suffer many of our own common problems such as cat arthritis , and general joint or muscle pain along with many other long term pain issues. Even with these types of general issues it may be suffering so you should ensure you take it to see your local veterinary clinic for advice.

Never try to self medicate your cat. Without the proper diagnosis you could just be treating the symptoms and not the cause, leaving room for a potentially fatal condition to go unnoticed. You may also be concerned to learn that household medication can cause severe liver damage to cats and in many cases proves to be fatal. Even the tiniest powder of household pain killers can cause severe and fatal damage. Even if you administer baby products such as Baby Tylenol (Calpol) or products for dogs or other small animals you can cause severe and serious damage to your cat’s liver.

Cats are incredibly special creatures that require special considerations especially when attempting to provide pain relief for cats. This is why it is always strongly recommended you never attempt to administer drugs or medicine without the full consent and advice of a qualified veterinarian. If you suspect your cat is in pain please talk to your local vet as soon as possible, they will be able to advise you on the correct medication, dose and guidance as well as carefully monitor it’s condition and liver to avoid damage.

If your vet has not prescribed pain killers then do not attempt to provide pain killers yourself. It can be very distressing to see your pet in pain but it could be more harmful to them to administer pain killers as a cat pain relief method. Your vet may not wish to administer cat pain relief medication if they feel the pain is durable and the risk is too great. They may also consider that the pain will prevent a normal lifestyle which may distress the injury further while the cat cannot feel the damage. If you feel your cat’s pain is increasing or it is suffering severely, you should talk to your vet about your cat’s condition and whether or not they think pain killers would be appropriate. If your vet has decided against pain killers, you can try a variety of different natural methods which would be much safer for your cat and still be a fully beneficial pain relief for cats.

Special health care and pain relief for cats may be needed for conditions related to the intestine which can become blocked for various reasons.

Cat Health Stricture Colon Problems

A problem that cats encounter and is commonly seen is the cat health stricture colon problem. The large intestine reduces in size and limits movement causing the large intestine lumen size reduction.

This problem may result from injury or because of an underlying health problem. In any case, the problem needs immediate attention to correct so the cat can return to good health.

Causes: One cause of a stricture colon problem comes from genetics or from a nutritional imbalance. Immune disorders and infection also cause a blocked colon in a cat. The problem with the colon can be the result of many reasons and with proper medical care, this problem will clear up in most cases. Determining the cause, helps determine how to treat the health problem.

Signs : The first sign that the cat may have a colon stricture is diarrhea or constipation. If your cat has an upper intestine problem, it will come with vomiting, whereas a lower intestine problem causes diarrhea. You may notice blood or mucus in the diarrhea as the cat becomes less and less able to go to the bathroom at all. Along with this stricture, the cat eats less and will become listless as they take in less food and become weak. It is possible for a cat with this problem to miss the litter box, as they need to relieve themselves immediately.

Diagnosis : of the large colon disorder deals with knowing the history of the cat and how long the diarrhea has been exhibited. The veterinary clinic may keep the cat overnight to watch for other signs and may decide what treatment will best work on the cat. Radiography works well for finding the affected area in the colon as well as ultra sound, which has proved the effectiveness of finding the problem and any other problems a cat may have in that area.

Treatments : A veterinarian must determine what is causing the problem and then determine what the proper treatment must consist of to cure the cat. If by chance the cause results from an allergy, the vet will recommend changing the diet to eliminate the problem. If the problem stems from an infection of some kind, the vet will prescribe an antibiotic, but if the problem looks severe, the vet may recommend surgery. Without proper treatment, the cat can become so ill they will die.

Pain relief treatments for cats with this problem may also be needed until fully cured. They may include cortisol or tramadol or more natural herbal or homeopathic treatments

Cat health stricture colon treatments help eliminate the problem, but you still need to watch the cat in case of a reoccurrence. The major concern with a large intestine issue is dehydration and lack of appetite. If these things are not corrected immediately, conditions that are more serious will cause the cat to possibly die from this health problem. Early prevention prevents this from happening and the condition becoming more serious.

Make sure to check for parasites in the feces and to get to the vet if the problem persists. For general, non-parasite based, digestive and bowel disturbances (vomiting and diarrhea for example), powdered slippery elm bark is the remedy

Constipation also is a very common problem, particularly in overweight, older cats. Typically you will see only one or two small, hard and dry fecal balls and sometimes you will find a little trail of them vs. an entire bowel movement

This is why it’s a crushing experience when your cat experiences a health problem. Urinary and bowel problems are some of the common health disorders that felines go through. Fortunately, you can use cat diapers

Periodontal disease in cats is a disease similar but more severe than gingivitis, that attacks the gum and bone and around the teeth.

One of the most common cat diseases is periodontal gum disease. It can keep your cat in a lot of pain and none of us like it when they suffer. The good thing is this is one of the most preventable diseases. You can help to prevent it by giving them a diet that is crunchy and by brushing their teeth every day.

Not many of us know that as a regular part of caring for your cat you can brush your cat’s teeth, nor that it is healthy for them. Those of you who don’t know how to brush their teeth can follow our step by step guide.

You are going to need a soft-bristled tooth brush and toothpaste for cats – which you can purchase at most veterinary offices. Using baking soda or human toothpastes can give them problems so you need to keep it away from them. Plus veterinary toothpastes have flavors that cats love.

Periodontal disease will usually affect the cat’s back and upper teeth more then anything. Plaque will build up on the surface of the teeth and right under the gum line. When it begins to build it will only take it 36 hours to harden into tartar that has no chance of being removed by a brush. Because of this you will need to have your cat’s teeth cleaned professionally before beginning a strict regimen for them. Otherwise it will be useless. Then it becomes a matter of gentle cat training to getyour cat usd to the idea.

Your cat doesn’t understand the harsh cat diseases that could affect it so it is your job to ease them into it. The best way to get your cat to enjoy this is to give them a treat after you have finished. Also remember to give them some love and praise. Keep in mind that it will take a few days before they are used to what you are doing.

To ease her into it give her a taste of the toothpaste. The next day let her taste the toothpaste as you run your fingers along her upper teeth and gums. Follow the same step – but replace your finger with a toothbrush the next day. Each day you will be able to cover more ground. Brushing their teeth should take you less then 30 seconds.

FIV..What is it? How is it transmitted? How does it develop and what are it’s symptoms? How do you test for it?

Understanding FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and how it affects your cat

Can it be treated?

These are the questions asked about this deadly feline virus.

It can also be a very painful condition due to secondary infections and complications.

So the cat owner may also be left looking for treatments for

cat pain relief

Feline Immuno deficiency Virus, more commonly known as FIV, is what is known as a retrovirus.

Cat Health Questions

When retroviruses invade a host, they replicate inside the host by using an enzyme called “reverse transcriptase”. The process is to use its own RNA as a template to create new DNA within cells of the host. In this way they evade the host body’s natural immune defense mechanisms while they make new copies of themselves. The virus then attacks the host’s immune response cells (antibodies) causing a reaction in the host’s body, in this case your cat, to produce elevated levels of antibodies. It becomes virtually a war waged within your cat’s body. With increasing destruction of antibodies, the host’s body then becomes vulnerable to other diseases and infections that it normally would find easy to fend off. The FIV virus and the HIV virus which causes AIDS in humans work in very similar ways.

How is FIV Transmitted? FIV cat disease prevention

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is fragile. It can be inactivated or destroyed with ultraviolet light, exposure to high temperatures, drying of the liquid medium it’s transmitted in, or when subjected to detergents. Since these things can also be harmful to your cat, this weakness can be only exploited when the virus is outside of her during the transmission stage of the virus from one cat to another. Basically, this means that keeping your cat’s environment clean can help reduce transmission of the disease.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is most commonly transmitted through bodily fluids, i.e. saliva or blood.

Male cats are more susceptible to FIV than females since they tend to fight more often. The first line of defense against this disease is to neuter your cat to reduce the instincts for territorial or sexually aggressive behavior. Limiting your cat’s contact with stray or feral cats will also reduce the incidence of FIV infection. If your kitty comes home with fresh wounds, clean them immediately. It may not be sure prevention, but any and all efforts can only be helpful to prevent the infection of your favorite kitty.

The transmission of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus from a mother cat to her kittens is very rare.

If it does occur, it’ll usually happen when the mother is infected during lactation or gestation. Generally speaking, Queens infected before pregnancy do not have infected kittens. And, good mothers don’t leave bite wounds on their kittens.

One other thing about retroviruses… they are species specific. FIV occurs only in cats (including the big wild cats, i.e. lions, snow leopards, etc.), just like HIV only occurs in humans; though it is a derivative of a primate virus occurring in chimpanzees. Which leads me to think that we shouldn’t be surprised if the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus should mutate and invade species which share genetic, physiological, environmental and/or other similarities with cats.

FIV Has 3 Stages of Development

The first stage of the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus infection is called the “acute” stage and is characterized by fevers, susceptibilities to skin & intestinal infections, and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms usually occur 4-6 weeks after infection. At this time there may be elevated levels of your cat’s antibodies present.

The second stage is called the “latent”, more formally the subclinical stage, and there’re no signs of the disease. This stage may last for years, but during this period the immune system is slowly being destroyed.

The third stage is the final, AIDS-like stage when the immunodeficiency becomes severe. It occurs most commonly in cats 5-12 years of age. In this clinical stage the cat’s immune system isn’t operating properly and she is prone to infections that under normal circumstances her body would easily ward off. But since her immune system cannot keep these infections under control, they multiply rapidly causing disease. Infections such as these are called “opportunistic infections”.

Clinical Symptoms of FIV

Infected cats will show non-specific symptoms such as fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, weight loss and swollen lymph nodes. In addition symptoms of FIV and FeLV (Feline Leukemia) are very similar. Additionally, other signs of the infection can occur:

Oral Infections such as gingivitis, mouth pain and refusing to eat.

Eye Diseases, redness, discharges, cloudiness or even glaucoma.

Gastrointestinal signs such as chronic diarrhea, bacterial or parasitic infestation.

Upper Respiratory Disease with sneezing & nasal discharge, breathing difficulties or coughing.

Skin & Ear Infections which are chronic. Ear mites, ringworm, mange, itching and hair loss.

Neurologic Diseases which can cause changes in behavior, loss of house-training habits, and dementia.

Anemia

When the immune system is depressed lymphoma and leukemia are always a dangerous possibility.

The above symptoms are not the final test for the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus since they can indicate the presence of any number of infections and diseases. If your kitty displays any of these signs the best care for your cat would be to take her to your veterinarian to be given specific tests based on the doctors analysis of her condition. Most chemistry tests show cats with FIV to be normal. But, these tests might indicate anemia and decreased numbers of white blood cells in ill cats. Also, a protein called globulin may be elevated in FIV infected cats.

Testing For FIV

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus infection is diagnosed with tests which detect a cat’s antibody production against FIV. Remember, antibodies are usually present 3-6 weeks after infection. But, it takes 8-12 weeks for detectable levels of antibodies to appear. Keep in mind the scuffle that Beauregard got into with that strange Tom… which, by the way, you never saw again.

Therefore, testing should be performed 8-12 weeks after the suspected infection occurs. If the infection occurrence timeline is unknown, kitty should be tested once, then again in 8-12 weeks. Tests can prove problematic since the occurrences of false and false positive tests is quite common. It usually takes a series of tests to reach a sure and accurate conclusion.

FIV Treatment

At this time there is no cure for FIV. If your cat is infected with the disease, she should be kept indoors to prevent secondary infections and to keep her from infecting other cats. Your veterinarian will use aggressive treatments of any infections she acquires as a result of her lowered immune system. Antibiotics for secondary infections, a good diet with adequate fluids will help your cat enjoy a quality filled life, and in the case of FIV, a sometimes long life. Remember, FIV can remain dormant for years.

Checking your cat’s ears regularly should be a part of yourregular cat care . Ear mites can cause infection and even loss of hearing. Ever noticed your cat shaking it’s head or scratching madly at its ear? Well it might be time to check your pet’s ear to make sure that they don’t have any unwanted visitors like the ear mite.

It is very important to make sure that your cat is free from ear mites as they are not only contagious to other cats in the home but can also infect other animals who live in the same environment. It is also important to keep your cats ears healthy as they rely on their hearing to listen out for their prey and to be able to protect them selves from being crept up upon and being attacked by other cats. Their ears also help them with balance when climbing trees etc. that if not functioning properly could cause all sorts of nasty accidents.

Ear mites are small spider like insects that love to make the inside of a cat ear their home. Unfortunately they cause infections and can cause damage to the eardrum causing a permanent loss of hearing. They are passed from one cat to another, this could be simply sharing the same sleeping places to close contact with other cats whilst grooming or playing together. The mites can also live for a while in the general environment so even if your cat hasn’t come directly in contact with another cat, there is still a possibility of them being passed on by your cat simply passing through a place where another cat with mites has been previously.

It is therefore wise to check your cat’s ears on a regular basis for any signs of infection of the mite itself. It is possible to see them with the naked eye and they look like small white dots against dark earwax. You may even get some indication that your cat has a problem in the ear by noticing vigorous head shaking or excessive ear scratching by your cat or you may notice a build up of excessive earwax that is very dark in colour and has a strong odour. It is always wise to make sure that these symptoms are caused by ear mites and not some other medical condition, so always get a vet to check the ears if you do suspect something is wrong.

If ear mites are correctly diagnosed it is important to kill them off before the infection becomes any worse or that it spreads to other animals. The vet will wipe away a lot of the earwax along with some of the mites that can be seen, he will then administer some eardrops that will be able to get deep into the ear canal. These drops will have to be administered for a three-week period to ensure the total eradication of the ear mites.

It is also important that you treat the cats fur at the same time with a flea powder, this will kill off any dormant eggs which may have lodged themselves in the fur. All the cats bedding and usual sleeping places need to be thoroughly washed and cleaned and the home should also be treated with a flea powder for the home. This will prevent any further re-infecting of your cat after treatments stops.

Other general care for your cat’s ears should include:
Protecting them during the summer months from sunburn with a non-toxic sun cream. This is very important for cats with light coloured ears. These areas are very prone to skin cancers and many cats in hotter climates end up having to have their ears amputated.

Make sure the ears are clear of any debris such as grass seed. If debris is left in the ear it can cause fungal or bacterial infections. Watching for any signs of imbalance or apparent dizziness in your cat. This could indicate an inner ear problem that will need urgent treatment by a vet.

If you own a cuddly cat at your home, then you should be aware about common cat diseases, its symptoms and the preventive measures.

Your cat may become sick due to various ailments. Cat diseases may range from kitty cold to some potential fatal disorders. Some of the common diseases found in cats are rabies, allergic dermatitis, dental disease, diabetes mellitus, food allergy, kidney disease, urinary tract disease, liver disease, feline panleukopenia, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).

Common Cat Diseases

Some common cat diseases are listed below:

Rabies: Rabies is a viral infection transmitted through a bite of an infected animal. This infection directly affects central nervous system. An infected cat may develop fever spikes and erratic behavior. Some of the major symptoms of cat rabies are excessive drooling, snapping at imaginary objects, dilated pupils, abnormal changes in cat’s appetite, exaggerated response to any stimulus and aggressive, violent behavior. In the last stage, cat may develop paralysis and respiratory failure, which may result in death.

Upper Respiratory Infection: This type of infection may prove fatal in cats. Some of the symptoms of upper respiratory infections in cats are runny nose and eyes, fever, reddened eyes, sneezing and decreased appetite.

Feline Panleukopenia: It is also known as feline distemper. In this disease, cat’s white blood cell count drops drastically. This condition can affect a cat’s immunity. As a result, cat becomes more susceptible to several infections. Its symptoms are loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting. It is a highly contagious viral disease, which is transmitted through human contact, contact with infected cats, paws, hair and food bowls.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV): FIV is transmitted through bites of an infected cat. Some general symptoms of FIV are oral infections, persistent diarrhea, appetite loss, respiratory problems and chronic and non-responding infections.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP): In most cases, FIP is fatal to cats. This virus exists in two forms such as wet (involves abdominal fluid) and dry form (not involving abdominal fluid). Both forms of FIP may give rise to symptoms like lethargy, fever, diarrhea, vomiting and loss of appetite.

Feline Chlamydia: It is a type of bacteria, affecting the cats. It infects cat’s eyes leading to conjunctivitis. General symptoms of feline Chlamydia are cough, sneezing, anorexia, running nose, pneumonia, breathing problem, fever and watery eyes.

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): It affects a cat’s immune system and can give rise to numerous forms of cancer and other related diseases. It may transmit during the catfights. Other possible causes for transmission of this disease are sharing of food, water bowls and contacting the urine, feces and saliva of an infected cat and from mother to kittens in the womb.

Parasites: Cats are infected by various types of parasites. External parasites such as fleas, ear mites are found on the skin or fur and in the ears. These parasites can cause sever itching. Some common intestinal parasites found in cats are hookworms, ringworms and tapeworms. Coccidia, living in the lining cells of cat’s intestine, can cause diarrhea, dehydration and even death, if left untreated.

Lower Urinary Tract Disease (LUTD): LUTD is a group of diseases associated with urinary system of the cat. It can cause pain, bleeding and increased urinating frequency. Some of the common symptoms of LUTD are frequent urination, blood in urine and inability to urinate. Other associated symptoms are decreased appetite, dehydration, vomiting, depression and even death.

Feline Diabetes: Many cats suffer from diabetes, which is an endocrine disorder. This disorder is more common in obese cats. Symptoms of cat diabetes are voracious appetite, significant increase in water intake and weight loss in spite of increased intake.

Skin Diseases: Skin disorders in cats are divided in four categories such as immune related, infectious skin diseases, hereditary and developmental skin diseases and cutaneous manifestations of internal diseases. Some of the most common cat skin diseases are alopecia, cheyletiellosis and acne.
Alopecia is caused by general illness, endocrine disturbances and local infections. This disease leads to hair loss, bald patches and reddened or inflamed skin. Cheyletiellosis is due to skin mites. It is a highly contagious disease causing constant itching. It can lead to scaling and flaking of skin.

Prevention of Cat Diseases

You can protect your cat from various common cat diseases. Most infections in cats such as rabies, FIV, URI and FIP can be prevented by vaccination. To prevent skin infections and parasite, you should keep your cat’s skin clean. Avoid sharing of your cat’s food bowl with other cats. If you notice the symptoms of any type of infection in your cat, then immediately consult the veterinarian. These infections can be treated with prescribed antibiotics. In most infections, cats suffer from the loss of appetite. However, you should make your cat to eat and drink in a sufficient quantity, so that the treatment would work more effectively.

Now with this information about common cat diseases, you can easily manage the health problems of your cat. Try to protect your cat from these diseases as much as possible. Take good care of its health, so that it will remain healthy and playful.
