Cats are often prone to suffering from bladder infections or feline cystitis

This is otherwise popularly known as an inflammation of the urinary bladder.

>> See: Cat health secrets the vet may not want you to know

This condition is also called Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS) or Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. It has many names and this can be somewhat confusing. the best treatment is prevention

Feline Bladder Infection

Has your cat ever been blindsided by a feline bladder infection?

Don’t let this happen to your kitty. This article will cover the basics of bladder infection in cats.

So that you can have a better idea of what to look out for and more chance of preventing your cat from suffering from this very uncomfortable condition

Your Cat’s Urinary Tract

The urinary tract is made up of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys are constantly filtering waste products out of your cat’s blood.

These waste products are carried out of the kidneys into the bladder by the ureters, tubes that run between your cat’s kidneys and his bladder.

>> Take care of your cat’s health. Learn more

The bladder is a muscular little bag that holds the urine until it leaves the body. The urine passes out of the body through the urethra. This system usually works with no problems, but sometimes trouble arises in the form of a bladder infection.

Cat Bladder Infection Symptoms

The bladder is a sterile environment that normally doesn’t contain any bacteria. However, if bacteria find a way in, they can cause a bladder infection in your cat.

Symptoms of a feline bladder infection include:

Urinating outside the litter box

Straining to urinate or having trouble passing urine

Crying out in pain when trying to urinate

Bloody urine

Drinking a lot of water

Inflammation in the bladder is what causes these symptoms, not the infection itself. It’s possible for a cat to have a bladder infection without showing inflammation, especially if your cat is being treated with an anti-inflammatory medication like cortisone.

>> Pain relief for cats: Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment

Be aware that if your cat can’t urinate at all, this is a blockage, which is a veterinary emergency. Get your cat to the vet as soon as possible.

How Your Vet Treats Cat Bladder Infection

Your vet will probably prescribe antibiotics to clear up the infection. Tests ordered may include a urinalysis to check for white blood cells and crystals in the urine, and a urine culture to identify which bacteria is causing the problem. The results of the urine culture can help determine which is the best antibiotic to use.

Tips For Preventing Cat Urinary Problems

There are several ways to prevent your cat from getting a bladder infection in the first place.

First, try to feed your cat canned food. A cat that eats only dry food is more prone to a bladder infection. Cats are meant to get most of their water from their food, and moisture levels are much too low in dry cat food.

Second, your cat must have access to lots of pure, clean water at all times. You may want to give him filtered water to be sure he’s not being exposed to any contaminants in his water.

Natural Remedies For Pets Can Prevent Cat Bladder Infection

People have been using herbal and homeopathic remedies for bladder problems for centuries. Now many cat owners are wondering if these remedies are available for cats.

The answer is yes. You’ll want to look for a remedy that has been specially formulated for pets. The remedy should include the herbs uva ursi and barberry, along with the homeopathic remedies Cantharis and Staphysagris. These ingredients have a proven track record for treating bladder problems.

You’ll also want to find a remedy that’s safe enough to give your cat every day to prevent cat urinary problems. It needs to be easy to administer, too. You won’t use it for long if you have to force your cat to take a pill every day. Be sure you purchase your remedies only from a company with a good reputation that stands behind its products.

Now it’s time for you to put these tips into action so your cat won’t suffer from feline bladder infection.

Cat Illness Symptoms

Giving cats pain relief is not recommended without the say so of a veterinarian and prescription and should always be under supervision. No one likes to see their pet in pain but before giving your cat any non prescriptional medication, do make certain that there is something wrong. Bone and joint disease is the most common factor for pain in cats. One common problem is cat arthritis pain. Cats are extremely cunning and can hide that they’re ill.

>> Vet secrets. Find out how to tell when a cat is in pain

The best place is the vets when your cat is ill for some unknown reason. A lot of people can mistakenly believe that their cat is healthy when in truth their cat is suffering but hiding it well. Some symptoms of a cat that is unwell are as follows; lack of appetite, increased sleeping pattern and increased howling or hissing. If you think your cat might be ill, keep an eye on it to check if it still grooms itself, as this is often a symptom of illness. Cat’s skin can be very sensitive so you have to be careful when grooming them.

Signs of illness can include obvious agitation and growling, as well as fast breathing. No one knows your cat better than you so as soon as you feel that something is not quite right with it, an appointment at the vets should be made. Pain relief for cats is often varied as a lot of the time it is hard to predict just how much pain the cat is in or how the cat will react to the medication. Through the combination of various medications, scientists have discovered that cats do not have to be given such high doses which often lead to side effects.

Pain in cats should always be treated as soon as possible before it develops into anything critical. Health issues manifest themselves differently in animals, so when your cat acts differently then normal, it may be the first sign of a problem with its health.

Cat Scratching Furniture

Cats are very good pets as they don t require as much attention as other options such as a dog.

You don’t have to walk the cat and you don t have to deal with it barking at everything that happens to walk by your home. The only thing you may have to spend on is cat furniture, which is essential for a healthy and happy cat.

With so much modern cat furniture available you should enjoy shopping for it. Young cats are extremely playful and you can interact with them when you want to. However, most cats are content to play with toys or to be independent.

This doesn’t mean that cats aren’t excellent companions though. They can be silly at times and they often enjoy curling up on your lap and purring. Your cat won’t come running when you are home at the end of day and knock you over.

They also don’t lick or bite so you won’t have to worry about how they will interact with others when you have company. Cats always seem to be able to tell when you need some comfort.

Taking care of a pet can help a child to become more responsible but some pets just come with too much time required. A cat makes a perfect choice for children because they tend to take care of themselves. As long as they are given sufficient food and water they will remain happy.

Indoor cats will have to be trained to use a litter box but most of them learn very quickly so you won’t have to deal with cleaning up such messes around your home. However, you need to clean the litter box regularly because cats do not like to use a dirty litter box.

There is an abundance of cat litter furniture to be found on the internet, and you will definitely find something to suit your taste in design, and budget.

Cats are clean animals as they spend a large amount of time grooming themselves each day. In the majority of cases, cats lead a very happy and long life without too many problems. They don’t cost very much because cat food and litter are very cheap. They don t require as many vet visits for routine shots either like dogs do which can become quite expensive.

Mouse control

For those that have problems with mice, cats make a great natural system for taking care of them. This means you won t have to deal with messy traps or dangerous poisons around your home. Many cat owners claim they haven t come across a mouse in their home for years with this line of defense.

Cats are very precious and beautiful animals as well. They have a gentle hum to them that can be relaxing for humans. They have coats in all colors as well as eyes that are very shiny and bright. Each cat has their own personality and you just can t help but adore them.

There are many breeds of cats if you want a particular kind but some of the most beautiful cats are those that are mixed breeds. Cats are very smart animals too so they will quickly catch up to what you like from them and what you don’t based on the praise you give them.

>> Learn Cat Training Secrets Here

Contrary to popular belief, cats are obedient and they want their owner s to be happy with them. They will learn fast that you don’t like them scratching on the furniture or putting their tail in your face while you are sleeping. To prevent them scratching on your furniture you can buy them their own cat scratching furniture.

I hear about cat dander problems all the time and it’s really sad if you love cats. If you’re one of the unlucky pet owners who have an allergy to cat dander, then great news, you may not have to give up your kitty.

Cat dander are very tiny pieces of cat skin shed by your pet and spread all over your home. If you have an allergy, here are some ways to minimise your problem:

1) Don t let your pet into the bedroom or onto the bed. I know this is difficult especially for those who share the bed with the cat, but the close proximity of your body to the bedsheet and pillow means that you ll be inhaling cat dander whenever you lie on the bed. Try to train your pet to know that your bedroom is a no go zone and you should see some improvement.

Also clean your bedsheets, pillow cases and blankets with hot water as much as possible.

2) Does your home have carpets? You may want to throw them out as cat dander cling on to them and bacteria breeds easily there. If that isn t an option, give them a good vacuum whenever you have the time.

3) Ditto for fabric sofas. The cloth of the sofa act as a breeding ground for cat dander. Replace them with leather sofa sets or wash the fabric as often as possible.

4) Now you need to take a look at your curtains. If you own the heavy fabric ones, cat dander might stick to them easily. You might want to consider curtains of another material or alternatives like blinds.

5) As cat dander can be airborne due to their small size, you have to look into cleaning the air too. It would be a great idea to purchase a good air purifier.

These 5 simple strategies should help you get started though by no way are they the only solutions. More cat dander advice can be found at CatDandruffAway.com

Cat dandruff is a topic that I’ve heard of too many times. It’s a problem that affects most of us cat owners, and if you own a cat, you’ll have to deal with it sooner or later

But fear not, there is a home remedy for cat dandruff that you can use without burning a hole in your wallet, just by looking at the symptoms and environment and taking action based on these symptoms.

>> Click here for Cat health care information

This is what I got from the excellent website on cat dandruff…

The majority of cat dandruff problems have in common three factors:

The cat dandruff is on the rump or tail and your cat is ageing or over-weight

If your pet is overweight or has gained weight suddenly and dandruff on her rump and tail, it’s a clear sign that she’s not able to reach these areas to clean herself. This is also a problem for older cats that lack the mobility to groom themselves.

Simply brush you cat and I suggest you groom her every two months. If you decide to bathe your cat, please avoid using human shampoos as that might dry her skin further and exacerbate the condition. Always use a cat shampoo and don’t forget to clean thoroughly as remaining shampoo stuck on her undercoat may only make matters worse.

Winter dandruff

If your cat only has dandruff issues in winter, then it could be the result of the cold and dry environment. To compond the problem, many cats like to lie about in the warm comforts of the fireplace, which quickly dries her skin causing it to flake.

Simply move her away from the fireplace regularly and observe if the problem persists. Having a humidifier would be a good idea, both for your pet and also yourself (humans get dry skin too…)

None of the above apply, is there anything else?

If your pet still has cat dandruff problems, just think, have you bought any new furniture lately? A new rug maybe? See if there has been any changes to her surroundings that she might be affected by and try to make the necessary adjustments.

If all the above tips still don’t work, don’t worry, check out other cat dandruff solutions.

Ever wondered if there’s something you can do at home to prevent or treat cat urinary problems?

Here’s a list of five natural remedies for cat bladder infection, along with how to choose the best natural remedies for pets.

Feed Your Cat A High-Quality Canned Food

But, you say, this isn’t a natural remedy. Actually it is. Feeding your cat the best diet possible is the easiest natural way to keep him healthy and prevent future problems due to poor nutrition.

Did you know that cats that eat only dry food are chronically dehydrated? Dry food has an extremely low moisture level, compared to canned food. Cats are meant to get most of their water from their food, so many of them don’t drink enough water, which can lead to cat urinary problems.

Fresh, Clean, Water Is A Must

Lots of clean, fresh water is another natural remedy that promotes bladder health in your cat. Your tap water may taste funny to your cat, so give him filtered water to make it more appealing to him. If your cat still won’t drink enough, you can add a little extra water to his canned food to increase his moisture intake.

Recommended Supplements

If your cat is suffering from a feline bladder infection, try giving him between 250 and 500 milligrams of vitamin C every day. Vitamin C is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps to relieve the pain of a cat bladder infection . It helps an irritated, inflamed bladder to heal itself, too.

Vitamin C can cause diarrhea if the dosage is too high, so start on the low side and work up to determine the best size dose for your kitty.

Cranberry is an old natural remedy that prevents bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls. Avoid the super-sweet cranberry juice at the grocery store, and give your cat cranberry capsules instead.

Herbal Pet Remedies

Many of these same herbs that people have been using for centuries can be used on pets, too. The best-known herbal pet remedies for feline urinary tract infections are uva ursi and Oregon graph holly.

Uva ursi is a strong diuretic that kills bacteria in the bladder, and also supports urinary system health.

Oregon grape holly contains berberine, a natural antibiotic that’s effective against strep and staph bacteria. It also relieves inflammation in the bladder.

Homeopathic Remedies For Cat Bladder Infection

Cantharis is a homeopathic remedy that is very effective for relieving pain. It’s also useful when your cat is straining to empty his bladder, since it gets rid of the feeling that the bladder is still full, even after it’s just been emptied.

Staphysagria also relieves pain and promotes healing of inflamed tissues.

How To Choose The Best Natural Remedies For Pets

You’re probably wondering how you’re going to give your cat four different herbs and homeopathic remedies. Wonder no more. There is a product available now that combines all four of these traditional remedies. It’s safe and effective, as well as being easy to use.

Cat health care information available here

You’ll be relieved to know that you can give this remedy right along with any antibiotic treatment your cat is on. This herbal remedy for pets doesn’t interfere with the antibiotics in any way. And you can continue giving your cat this remedy to support bladder health long after the antibiotic is finished.

Now that you’re armed with this information, you can prevent cat urinary problems from sneaking up on your feline friend.

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common disorders of the endocrine (hormone) gland that affects a huge population of cats. It can severely affect pet health and needs to be taken care of before it causes severe pet health problems.

Surgery Or Medicine For Cat With Hyperthyroidism?

The thyroid gland is situated in the neck of your cat and is quite small in size. It produces a thyroid hormone also known as thyroxine (T4) as well as small amounts of triodothyronine (T3). These hormones help in regulating the metabolic rate of the cat’s body and can affect the working of every system or organ in his body.

The thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) produced in the pituitary gland controls the production of thyroid hormones. If this production stops or if the required amount of hormones is not produced then it can adversely affect pet health.

When you bring home kittens, you need to take advice from your vet regarding its food, diet and ask different types of pet health questions. The pet health questions can vary from understanding the various diseases to knowledge of symptoms and treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats. Hyperthyroidism is actually caused when the thyroid gland of your cat starts producing excessive thyroid hormones and this condition is known as hyperthyroidism.

The immediate cause for hyperthyroidism is due to the increase in non-cancerous cells of the thyroid gland. These are abnormal cells and can vary in different sizes from small nodules known as adenomas to bid nodules known as multiple adenomas. In the last 25 years, there has been a rise in the number of cats affected by hyperthyroidism. This is a medical condition that needs good pet health care.

Hyperthyroidism normally occurs in those cats, which are aged between 4 years and 22 years. Normally, this medical condition occurs as your cat will grow older, which means that you will have to take better care of pet health . Hyperthyroidism can affect both male and female cats.

The various symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

Increase in the consumption of food
Weight loss
Vomiting
Increase in water consumption
Increased urination
behavior changes
Nervousness and restlessness
Increased activity or hyperactivity
Hair loss
Tremors
Diarrhea
labored breathing
Loss of appetite

These affects overall pet health and can be taken care of only if you are able to identify any of the symptoms and take your cat to the vet immediately. Some cats even show rapid heart rate due to hyperthyroidism leading to high blood pressure. Those cats that are not treated for hyperthyroidism might develop a fatal heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which can lead to death.

What is the treatment of Hyperthryoidism?

There are currently three main treatments for hyperthyroidism in cats and your veterinary surgeon will discuss the most appropriate treatment options with you.

Medical treatment

Surgical removal of the thyroid gland

Radioactive iodine therapy

Medical treatment

Using anti thyroid drugs is often the first line of treatment for a hyperthyroid cat. These drugs often have to be given two or three times a day so can be difficult for some owners to administer in an uncooperative cat. They act by reducing the amount of thyroid hormones released by the thyroid gland. The effect of these drugs may need to be monitored by blood tests at regular intervals. They are often successfully used in the long term treatment of hyperthyroidism and some cats can be maintained on these drugs alone. Occasional side effects of these anti-thyroid drugs include anorexia, vomiting and lethargy.

Surgical removal of the thyroid gland

Surgical removal or thyroidectomy is a delicate operation performed if the medical treatment of hyperthyroidism is proving unsuccessful. Possible complications include nerve damage and parathyroid gland removal. The parathyroid gland is a very small often unidentifiable gland which is positioned adjacent to the thyroid gland. This gland is responsible for the control of calcium levels in the blood and its accidental removal can cause signs of hypocalcaemia which owners should be aware of in cats that have undergone thyroid surgery.

Radioactive iodine therapy

An injection of radioactive iodine is a relatively safe and successful curative treatment for hyperthyroidism in cats. The radioactive iodine is selectively taken up by the thyroid gland where it works by destroying this overactive thyroid tissue. It also destroys thyroid tissue not accessible by surgery. Because it only selectively targets thyroid tissue, no other tissues in the body are harmed including the parathyroid glands so there is no risk of developing hypocalcaemia. There is also no anaesthetic involved.

Some glandular diseases such as Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism can give rise to hair loss in cats, generally in a symmetrical pattern along both sides.

Many cat owners believe that cat flea is just a nuisance. However, fleas can be a health hazard to cats. Keep reading to find out more on how cat health can be affected by fleas

With the responsibility of keeping a cat, comes the added task of ensuring that they are flea free.

Cat Health And Fleas – How Do Fleas Affect Your Cat’s Health?

Fleas is a problem that all cat owners would have to deal with at one time or another. Ask any cat owners and I’m sure you would get a same answer from all of them and that is, getting rid of fleas on cats is not an easy task. It requires an enormous amount of effort and time to eradicate these pesky little creatures once they come into contact with your cat. What’s worse is that not only are fleas a nuisance, they are also the cause of many health problems that we see in cats.

Pain relief and treatment options for cats affected by fleas, flea bites, itching and scratching

The most common cat fleas health hazards that we see is flea allergic dermatitis or what’s commonly known as FAD. This is a skin disorder caused by an allergic reaction to an allergen found in the saliva of fleas. When fleas bite on the cat for a blood meal, it secrets saliva. The allergen in the fleas’ saliva will result in pruritus (intense itch) causing the cat to scratch and lick itself excessively. This in turn lead to hair loss and raw and inflamed skin due to the constant non-stop scratching and licking.

The affected cat will feel miserable and their appetite will tend to be affected leading to weight loss.

Tapeworms infestation is another health concern brought about by fleas. Cats groom themselves by licking their hair coat. While doing so, they may ingest a flea carrying tapeworms larva and the cat get infected as a result. You can easily tell if your cat is having tapeworms by checking its anus. Chances are that you would be able to detect the presence of what look like rice grain segments of the tapeworms. Though tapeworms would not cause any major health issue in cats, their presence in the guts of cats may hinder the proper absorption of nutrients resulting in malnutrition and weight loss. This is especially so when a cat is heavily infested with tapeworms.

Fleas may also cause anemia in cats. They feed on the blood of cats. Though one flea will only feed on a minute quantity each time, the combined quantity by hundreds of fleas living off the poor cat can be considerable especially in young and immature kittens.

Feline Anemia Infection or FIA is another parasitic infection caused by fleas. Fleas are carriers of the blood parasite call Haemobartonella felis that can cause rupturing of red blood cells in cats. This again may cause anemia in cats resulting in death if severe and not treated.

The only way you can protect your cats from these dreadful diseases is to have a proper flea control for cats. “Getting Rid Of Cat Fleas” will show you how you can eradicate these pesky creatures before any harm caused. Get to know the right products to use and how to use them to keep your cat flea free.

To prevent flea re-infestation, it’s not sufficient to just treat your cat, the surrounding environment need to be treated as well. “House Flea Control” is where you will get step-by-step instructions on how you can effectively get rid of fleas in your house both indoor and outdoor. By Ann Wong

Cat fleas and the advantage flea control system

The cat fleas are most likely to be the fleas that your pets bring into your home, even the fleas that come in on the back of your dog are likely to be cat fleas, these fleas are parasites that need hosts such as your pets to live.

My Cat Has Fleas! Pause for Paws

For such parasitic insects, cat flea can cause an unbearable physical and emotional stress upon you and your pet. Just when you think you’ve got an infestation under control, a whole new generation rises up ready to feed.

Why You Should Want To Get Rid of Cat Fleas

Does your cat have fleas? A cat that is scratching and biting itself definitely has some kind of skin irritation, and it could be caused by cat fleas.

Pet and Home Care Info Tips

Fleas don’t do well in either extreme. Bathing your pet is an effective control measure. It is not necessary to use insecticidal shampoos, most soaps will kill fleas. Use a comb to remove fleas from your dog or cat.

Learn how to recognize cat illnesses using only the knowledge of its symptoms. Read what are 7 the most common cat illnesses symptoms and make the best of it. Spot the symptoms in time and nip your cat illnesses in the bud.

Save your beloved cat from stress and pain and yourself from bills from your vet.

It is a big responsibility to posses a pet. As cat is not a toy you can not take it home only for having fun or just for cuddling. Cat’s health and safety are in your hands. As an owner you have the biggest influence on his life expectancy as well. That is why knowledge of cat illnesses symptoms is so important here. If you know them you have a great chance to nip the illness in the bud and the same safe your cat from suffering from it. By recognizing the illnesses symptoms correctly and in time and by reacting in the right way you may even safe your cat’s life. So be the responsible cat owner and read the common cat illnesses symptoms listed below. Make your cat feel safe and healthy with you.

1) Gastric/Digestive problems
If you notice your cat vomiting (and it has nothing in common with hairballs) or if your pet has a diarrhea, constipation or suffers from incontinence then you can be sure that there is something wrong with his stomach or bowels – or both of them. It is not normal for cat to vomit and either to have diarrhea and constipation. It is also not normal for cats to do not go outside or to their litter box for urinating or stooling because the biggest cats’ nature is their cleanliness. Be sure that these are the symptoms of some digestive problems.

2) Abnormalities connected with cat’s stool and/or urine
If you spot the blood trace in your cat’s stool and/or urine, different and strange smell, color and consistency and more or less urine than usually then this is a certain sign of an illness.

3) Strange manners, attitude different than usually
Be sure that it is not a good sign if your cat changes from being calm and nice to aggressive or withdrawn. If your cat has not his normal energy, is hiding and instead of spending his time in his favorite way laying on top of things he prefers staying on the floor most of his time. When the behaviour of your cat is out of ordinary it is a red light for you.

4) Butter fingers behavior – disorientation
Every type of disorientation belongs to the common cat illnesses symptoms. When you see your cat being a little bit confused, stumbling and falling during walking or falling trying to jump somewhere then remember to do not ignore it. The butter fingers behavior is not a good sign and if you do not react in time to check the root cause and treat it then you will observe your cat getting only worse.

5) Abnormalities connected with cat’s drinking and eating
Any changes in eating or drinking maybe a disease symptom as well. Your cat loses his appetite, does not drink a lot or drinks much more than usually. Check what illnesses corresponding to these symptoms and treat your cat as soon as possible Do you know that for example any increase in thirst may be a kidney infection sign. Do not overlook and do not disregard them.

6) Anomalous connected with cat’s fur and body
First of all when you see flaking skin, hair falling out more than normal or dull coat – check it. These are some serious cat illnesses symptoms. Second if your cat lick herself so much that she has bald areas – check it as well as it maybe a fleas symptom. Others like discharge coming from the nose and eyes or the third eyelid visible with cat’s eyes being wide opened are also significant symptoms of some illnesses and need to be checked and eliminated quickly. These maybe signs of sinus infection or an allergy.

7) Your cat become untouchable
If your cat has been injured or has an infection on a part of his body then be sure that he will not allow you to be touched on this particular part. It’s an alarm signal for you!

These are 7 the most common cat illnesses symptoms. If you have had a cat I am sure you have already met some of these symptoms with him. And if you are a fresh cat owner you will see some of these diseases sings with him sooner or later.

It is a part of life to be sick from time to time. It is as normal for pets as for people.

It is so obvious your cat will be meeting some healthy problems at least few times a year that possessing a medical book about cat illnesses is really worth of it for every cat owner.

In spite of consulting a vet every time you notice something strange going on with your cat you will: take your book, check what type of illnesses correspond to the symptoms you have noticed.

Read how to treat it at home, take an action and help your cat to recover

Do not fetch your vet every time your cat gets diarrhea – just check it out by yourself with the right e-book. Do it in time, at the beginning of an illness or even before it starts and take a chance to nip it still in the bud.

To achieve this I would like to recommend you a great e-bookand it is called Veterinary Secrets Revealed You will find there everything about cat illnesses symptoms, what illnesses do they correspond to and how to treat them at home.

An important part of keeping your cat healthly and happy is checking and cleaning their ears. Because the ears are one of the few parts that cats can not reach themselves they need a little help from a loving owner.

Keeping your cats ears clean is extremely important because any unremoved dirt, debris, or wax can clog the ears and cause infections. Regular ear cleaning at home augment’s your cats own natural grooming habits.

Ear Check For Feline Itching

1. How to check the ears

During petting, casually check your cats ears for discharge, redness, unpleasant smell, swelling, and even lumps. Also observe your cat’s behaviour, if he often scratches or paws at his ears (and sometimes even shakes his head often), then he might be feeling discomfort in the ear area.

If you notice your cats ears are becoming painful or maybe inflamed, visit a veterinarian as soon as possible. The veterinarian has the equipment to look deep into your cat’s ear canal and give an accurate diagnosis. The veterinarian will determine if allergies, skin conditions, ear mites, bacteria, yeasts, and fungi are causing ear diseases. Seek early treatment, or your cat’s ear condition may become too late to heal.

2. How to clean the ears

Ask your veterinarian for gentle ear cleaning solutions you can use to keep your cats ears clean. These special solutions are effective in removing excess wax, moisture, and debris from your cat’s outer ear canal. Be sure to use only solutions that are specifically formulated for cats. Avoid medicated solutions, unless your veterinarian advises you to use it.

Different solutions are administered differently, but most of them require you to follow these steps.

* You typically only need a few drops of the ear solution. Squeeze the bottle and let a few drops fall on into your cat’s ear canal.

* Start massaging the base of your cats ear gently. You should hear a ‘squelch’ while you do this. Repeat the same procedure with the other ear. After both ears have been cleaned, let your cat shake its head, this loosens the waxes.

NOTE: Stop massaging immediately if your cat feels pain and then take your cat to the veterinarian if you haven’t already done so.

* Wipe the solution by wrapping your forefinger with cotton wool, this should clean off wax and debris. Do this gently though and do not poke in too deep, or you might hurt your cats eardrum.

It is recommended not to use cotton buds, which can injure the ear canals’ sensitive lining.
