Pet Health Awareness : Cats

Felines generally are independent and don’t want to be disturbed, hence providing excellent health care can be a challenge to its owner. Health issues might not be easy to determine because cats can be secretive. Their health, when drawn out to long term medical care, treatment and medications is stressful to both you and your furry friend.

Pet Health Care Issues

Normal health issues can include minor problems including ear mites and tape worms to more moderate issues including flea infestation and felines that are allergic to flea bites. All of these health issues can be addressed by taking it to the veterinarian for yearly checkups, shots and purchasing a good flea preventative. More severe health problems affecting felines can range from bad teeth that have become infected and require extraction, urinary tract problems that can be a long term issue, colon problems requiring lifelong medication and feline leukemia which is an extremely critical health challenge.

Helpful Preventative Measures

As a caretaker and provider, one of the first things you can do to promote good feline health is to have your pet spayed or neutered. Felines that are not altered and come into contact with other male felines run the risk of not only unwanted pregnancies for the females, but also being exposed to unhealthy mates that have not had their shots and may be suffering from little or no attention by a health care provider. Males who have not been altered are also at risk of becoming infected by unhealthy cats and also become injured while fighting with other unaltered males. These types of injuries can become infected.

Giving  good quality food , both dry and canned which is nutritious and essential is a way to promote good pet health. Exercise is a must for felines to avoid them becoming overweight. Kittens are energetic but as they grow old, they tend to slow down so it’s necessary to keep your felines active. There are many ways to keep your pet active like buying a carpeted scratch post for clawing exercise, walking around the yard using a collar and leash, sprinkling catnip on a throw rug or towel that will keep them busy, playing with your felines to keep them active and finding safe  toys that interest them are the things you can do to keep it active. A yearly visit to the veterinarian is recommended for the doctor to tract any changes in the health of your kitty.
