Litter Box Training Your Cat

Most kittens are fairly easy to litter train and will generally begin to use a litter box soon after being introduced to one. Your new cat may already know how to use a litter pan, since many kittens learn to use it from watching their mothers. However, cats are very particular creatures by nature and can easily be put off to using something for a variety of different reasons. That’s why its important to choose the right box, and  train your kitten  properly

Kittens prefer to go outside to relieve themselves, and you should keep this in mind before you start litter training. Cats don’t instinctively like using a cat litter box; be sure to choose one that is acceptable to her. Keep the following things in mind as you go about litter training your new cat:

1. Buy the same type of litter that your cat has been using with the previous owner, or breeder. This will make training easier.

2. Your litter tray should be easy for your cat to use – not too deep, but not shallow enough to end up with litter all over the floor when used. Fill the litter pan to the depth recommended by the litter manufacturer.

3. Place your litter tray in an easily accessible and traffic-free corner of the room keeping it well away from your kitten s food and water dishes. You may even need to consider using more than one litter box to provide your kitten with greater access to a tray.

4. In multi-cat houses, you should purchase a separate litter box for each cat and place it in its own area. Many cats will reject a common litter tray used by other cats in the household, as they generally like to relieve themselves in peace.

5. The best way to start introducing your kitten to its tray is to place it in there regularly, particularly after meals. Always give your kitten praise when she gets in the litter box, even more when she finally uses it.

6. Keep your cat’s litter box clean by removing any soiled litter regularly. Give the pan a throrough cleaning at least one every week. Because many household solutions can be harmful to your cat, its always best to clean the litter tray with a disinfectant made especially for pets. Because some cleaners may have a strong chemical smell, you should avoid anything with a heavy scent that your cat may dislike. It will deter him from using the litter pan. Never change a litter tray when you are pregnant, as there is a risk of toxoplasmosis.

7. Because cats can develop a condition known as cystitis from not "going" regularly, never leave your kitten alone with a litter tray available.

Since cats don’t typically respond to verbal commands like dogs do, you need to be very patient during the  training  process.

If you see your kitten scratching or squatting, pick her up right away and place her in the litter pan. Most cats will begin to learn very quickly, however, sometimes it takes a bit more patience. If you find that your kitten still doesn t get the message, then you could try using a spray that is specially formulated to attract cats to their litter boxes. For the stubborn cat that decides to use furniture or another undesired area for relieving herself, there are cat deterrent sprays available to keep this from happening. With some encouragement from you, your kitten should start using the litter pan on her own without any further issues.
